Frequently Asked Questions

If you don’t find your question here, email us at thechurchinwatsonville@gmail.com or call us at (831) 288-3007 and we’ll add your question and answer to this page.

Q: What does non-denominational mean?

A: In the context of the church, it simply means that we follow the example of the 1st century church as described in the New Testament in the Bible (Matthew 16:18). We have no other “guidance”, traditions, philosophies, “interpretations” or creeds.

Q: What is the music like? Is there a band or choir?

A: There are no examples or mentions of bands or choirs in the New Testament church (unlike the temple worship described in the Old Testament under the Law of Moses), so the music in our worship services comes from us; a capella singing (Ephesians 5:19, 1 Corinthians 14:15, Romans 15:9, etc.). It’s simple, heartfelt and encouraging.

Q: Will I understand what is happening in the worship service or are there practices (responses, etc.) that I don’t know?

A: You won’t have any trouble understanding what is going on – there are no memorized prayers, responses, versicles or anything of the sort. We sing from a song book with almost 1,000 songs in it so there’s plenty of variety. Prayers are from the heart, not from a program and sermons are from the Bible – focused on helping everyone grow in spirit and in truth.

Q: Am I expected to give anything during the collection?

A: As directed in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2, a collection is taken every Sunday to fund the work of the church. This is a responsibility of the members of the congregation, and nothing is expected of visitors. The funds are used for the same purposes as in the 1st century; supporting evangelistic and missionary work (Philippians 4:15,16; 1 Corinthians 9:4-11), helping the poor (Galatians 2:10), etc. Our finances are open to everyone to see how contributed funds are being used.
